New technology helping with collision investigations

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON - The Washington State Patrol (WSP) is able to get a birds eye view with the help of some new equipment.

"Behind me right here are two UAS's that the Washington State Patrol uses for collision investigations," said Chris Thorson, WSP Trooper.

UAS stands for unmanned aerial system and with these devices flying over collisions troopers are able to gather more information for their investigations.

"These are real helpful for reducing road closure times, for investigative and proper mapping of scenes and also officer safety," said Thorson.

WSP detectives and collision specialists started experimenting with UAS's in 2017. The Yakima division says they recently received theirs in May and have already noticed road closure times reduce by 75%.

"Before the Washington State Patrol obtained these UAS's we were looking at maybe a three hour closure cut down to one hour," said Thorson.

With the use of a computer program and with the pictures taken detectives are able to create a digital 2D model of the scene.

WSP says with these UAS's being such a new addition their focus will be to simply get more of them within all WSP divisions. As of now there are only 60 being used.
