Latest in the Kavanaugh testimony and local responses

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON: A hearing that's captivated the country with eyes glued to televisions, to phones - all watching the hearing on
Capitol Hill as
Supreme Court Nominee Brett Kavanaugh and Doctor Christine Blasey Ford both tell the world their sides of the story.

Inside - it's a more muted atmosphere than most major hearings. The room is smaller and there are fewer cameras. Dr. Ford asked that they try to minimize the circus around this - even as it played out on a worldwide stage.

Today was really an emotional 'he said she said' day, as we heard from both Kavanaugh and Dr. Ford. Up first- Christine Blasey Ford, describing an alleged sexual assault during a house party decades ago. Ford identifies her attacker as Supreme Court Nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

Ford says Kavanaugh drunkenly attacked her, as a friend watched.

"I believed he was going to rape me. I tried to yell for help. When I did, Brett put his hand over my mouth to stop me from yelling. They're having fun at my expense," said Doctor Christine Blasey Ford.

Kavanaugh, however, denies it all and democrats asked him why he didn't take the allegations to the FBI.

"This confirmation period has turned into a disgrace," said Brett Kavanaugh.

There were tensions on both sides- reaching a boiling point. Now it's up to senators to decide who to believe.

A large group of women across the nation also protested Kavanaugh's appointment to the Supreme Court today. While most of the chants and signs point to the allegations against him, others identify Roe vs. Wade as a reason to oppose his confirmation- That's the court case that legalized abortion.

Closer to home- Planned Parenthood community groups in Yakima also protest Kavanaugh - calling for Kavanaugh's confirmation process to stop immediately.

They believe Kavanaugh's approval will also be met with widespread opposition to abortion across the country. They believe... If confirmed, Kavanaugh would shift the balance of the supreme court away from the right to have an abortion.

In a statement released to us today- this group says "As the nation's leading provider and advocate of high-quality, affordable reproductive and sexual health care. Planned Parenthood believes that survivors of sexual assault deserve compassionate, affordable reproductive health care."

If approved- Kavanaugh would serve a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court. Kavanaugh said today that he may be voted down, but he will never quit. Tomorrow... another step in the confirmation process, as a judiciary committee votes on whether he moves forward.
