How does USMCA impact local dairy companies and fruit growers?

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, WA - President Trump is one step closer towards replacing NAFTA. Monday morning he announced that Canada along with the U.S. and Mexico have come to an agreement on a new trade deal.
The new pact is being called the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement or USMCA.

This new agreement will give American dairy farmers more access to the Canadian market, U.S. drug companies can fend off generic competition for a few more years and automakers are under pressure to build more cars where workers earn decent wages.

With so many dairy companies and fruit growers in the area we looked into what kind of impact this new deal could cause for them.

According to the Northwest Horticultural Council, the USMCA will not impact local fruit growers, which is a good thing.

"Basically it does no harm, which is one of our initial goals," said Mark Powers, president of Northwest Horticultural Council.

Powers adds that this new deal is positive because it allows fruit growers to continue producing the same amount of produce.

"Mexico is our largest apple export market, it's our largest pear market. We sell 20% of our pears that are grown to Mexico and Canada, and about 15% of our apples, and that trade agreement is what has grown our ability to sell," said Powers.

As for dairy companies the new agreement gives American dairy farmers more access to the Canadian dairy market.

Stan Ryan, Dairgold president and CEO says, "Dairy trade with Canada was one of the most difficult and contentious negotiating issues to solve in the entire USMCA deal."

He also adds that this new deal does three things for Dairgold. One, it preserves and enhances the Mexico trade relationship. Two, it stops Canada's recent trade-distorting policies, and three, it provides some new access to Canada.
