NAMI Yakima opens new Family to Family Class

YAKIMA, WA- One in five adults in Washington have a mental illness. The National Association of Mental Illness in Yakima is holding a 12-week class starting October 4. The Family-to-Family class is a peer to peer program that strives to help families dealing with mental illnesses. The education program will provide support and education to family and friends of individuals who are living with mental illnesses.

Classes are taught by trained family members and graduates of the program. Some of the topics covered include:

  • Explanation of major brain disorders
  • The latest information about medications (including side effects and strategies for promoting medication adherence)
  • Information about the most effective treatments available
  • What to do in a crisis
  • Handling your loved one’s hospitalization and relapse
  • Problem solving and communication skills
  • Advocating for your loved ones; how to work with professionals
  • Taking care of yourself

    ELLENSBURG, WA - A medical call leads police to a marijuana grow, and now one man is in jail and facing multiple charges. Around 5 p.m. Thursday night, medics were called out to a home in the 100 block of East Helena Avenue to check on an elderly woman.
