YWCA provides Local Domestic Violence Resources

YAKIMA, WA- October is National Domestic Violence Awareness month, and Yakima's YWCA chapter is hoping to bring more awareness to domestic violence. Nearly 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 males are victims of severe physical violence by a partner in their lifetime. Locally in Yakima, YPD responds to over 10 domestic violence calls a day. The YWCA provides vital resources for victims of domestic violence, including a 24/7 emergency hotline, transitional housing, legal aid, and a variety of services. 

In 2017, the Yakima YWCA received nearly 6900 calls for help through their hotline. By calling 509-248-7796, victims can receive information, get help, and get connected to a variety of services.

Local Domestic Violence Statistics:

  • Yakima County: there are 13.9 incidents of domestic violence per 1000 residents.
  • Washington State: there are 7.4 incidents per 1000 residents
  • 1 in 4 adult women and 1 in 7 adult men have been victims of severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their life.
  • Nearly 8-million days of paid work are lost each year because of domestic violence
  • 94% of victims are between the ages of 16-19
  • Highest rate of domestic violence occurs in 16-24 year olds

During the month of October, YWCA will be holding a variety of events:

- Oct.17-24: Glassybaby is coming to YWCA. 4-7pm on Oct. 17 at Redifer Brewing, join in supporting Votives to End Violence against women. 

-Oct. 20- Sign up for the 2nd annual Warrior Women 5k. This ladies only 5k will be at Franklin Park. A portion of the proceeds go to YWCA Yakima.

-October- throughout the month, YWCA will be holding voter registration booth as well to help anyone register to vote before Nov. 6 election
