Over 500 8th graders participate in ultimate energy experience

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK: Sending out a text takes little thought for most of us, let alone thoughts about where the energy to send it, comes from. Today hundreds of 8th graders found out the answer to that.

Several middle school students around the area bussed over 500 8th graders for the 3rd annual "STEM Energy Experience" at the REACH Interpretive Center.

This is a time where students get to learn all about where the energy that's fueling their text messages being sent through comes from. Over 8 energy providers such as Benton PUD, Benton REA and Bonneville Power and more were there to teach these 8th graders about where energy comes from, energy safety, efficiency, and all about public power.

Through hands on demonstration students get to see just how powerful 7,000 volts can be, and how important it is to 'look up and look out.'

"Kids learn how to be more aware and look up, especially if they have irrigation lines at home or objects in pools. "Sticking things up in the air without knowing their surroundings," said lineman Sam Somes.

After seeing just how powerful 7,000 thousand volts of power can be, many students say… Yeah they get the hint.

"These kids come out and get to see an actual demonstration of the voltage that's out there on the power lines, because you can't see it hear it or smell it," said Sam Somes.

Students also got to learn about each of these jobs in hopes of becoming the next lineman or energy providers to come.
