YFD educates the public for Fire Prevention Week

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, WA - Fire departments all over have come together to educate the public on how to prevent and escape a house fire as part of this years fire prevention week.

This year a tradition has fallen right in the middle. The Yakima Fire Department (YFD) is hosting their 24th annual Spaghetti Feed.

All proceeds raised will be going towards the Washington State Council of Firefighters Burn Foundation.

For fire prevention week this year a specific message is being shared.

That message is to "Look, listen and learn. Fire can happen anywhere."

Firefighters recommend that people look for any electrical or fire hazards in their home. They say a perfect example is making sure chimneys are clean especially as the colder months approach and people begin to use their fire places.

They also suggest listening for the sound of a smoke alarm. A big part of this step is testing your smoke alarms to ensure maximum safety.

"What I want everyone to know is that one smoke alarm functioning in your home, functioning, working in your home can reduce your risk of loss of life by 50 percent," said Jeff Pfaff with YFD.

Lastly, firefighters say learning two ways out of your home is crucial.

"The majority of people that die from a fire don't die from a fire it's self. They die from smoke inhalation first so it's extremely important for you and your family," said Pfaff.

Pfaff also says national records show that fires have decreased, but he says that it not the case in Yakima. He says fire numbers have been the same over the years.
