The "Fanboni" now a part of Tri-City Americans games

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, WA - Going to an Americans game isn't just about watching hockey - there's so much more that goes into the fan experience.

The "Fanboni" is one of the new additions to the Toyota Center, as well as the new LED lights that bring an extra little something to what already was a great hockey experience.

"I've never seen one before besides the Everett one, but this one's kinda cool; it's pretty big," said Isaac Johnson, Americans Forward and Novice Fanboni Driver. "Put fans on it and I bet it's a blast. You go to other rinks and their lights are crazy and whatnot. With those lights I think it helps us a lot, when you score the lights go out and it's pretty cool. Compared to other rinks, we're getting up there with them."

But when the Fanboni arrived to the Tri-Cities, it was just a normal Zamboni. That is, until the boys down at SonShine Collision Services got ahold of it.

"Took it to the back, had one our mechanics check the mechanical basics of it," said Russ Wood, Production Manager at SonShine Collision Services. "He did all the removal of the ice auger and all those kinds of things. Rob was able to locate a set of industrial stairs; we have a young man here who's really good at fabrication. He was able to come up with some really sharp ideas on the tubing for the rails, cutting the top out, adding the stairs to it.

"A lot of the conversion stuff is just a lot of dismantling, re-fabricating so you can actually stand in it, make it safe," SonShine Collision Services' owner, Rob Myers, said.

And when the work was done, the Americans had a pretty sick ride to clean the ice at the Toyota Center. Now it comes out after every first period with fans along for the ride. And right on the side, The SonShine logo... which makes the whole team at SonShine very proud.

"Oh yeah; it's pretty cool," Myers said. "It's always fun to see that. The gentleman who was just in here for an estimate, that's what he was just talking about too."

Check out the Fanboni for yourself at the next Americans game!
