Walla Walla Heritage Park new plans in the making

Posted: Updated:

WALLA WALLA: Take a step down Main Street in Walla Walla, and it's a sight for family members to enjoy each others company or for locals to experience what the town has to offer. But-Imagine a park right in the middle to make it all the more enjoyable.

Wednesday locals, City Council members and city planners all came together to discuss what's been in the making for Heritage Park. Many people say the layout of it right now (What's been there since the 90's)  poses some safety concerns for the community. For example: some say there's been drug activity there- and it's not a very inviting place for all who walk down Main Street.

The Parks and Recreation Department wants to turn it into a multi-use park with a water feature, a place to have live bands, a resting area and overall a place for families to join together.

"We have found needles from drug use there. There are places for them to hide. A new design would encourage more use of the park and more eyes on the park. Currently there is a design of a bulb, it's a way to announce the park for people walking up and down main street," said Parks and Recreation Director Andy Coleman.

There is also plan to install lighting features at night, so that they can address the safety aspect.

The estimated cost for the project could range from 2.1 million dollars to 2.3 million dollars; this would cover everything the Parks and Recreation Department hopes to get done.

Andy Coleman says right now the city doesn't have the funds for it, because it wasn't apart of the city's 2019-2010 budget plan. This is because  the blueprints weren't finished in time when the City made their budget for the next two years.

The parks department hopes to rely on outside sources for money also rather than solely the city. Andy Coleman says he's hoping for all of the funds to be there by 2021.
