Local third graders participate in the Great Washington Shakeout

Posted: Updated:

PASCO, WA- The Great Washington Shakeout event occurred in sync with the Great American Shakeout today at 10:18 am. This event is a worldwide drill to prepare you and your family in the case a significant magnitude earthquake should hit.

The Great American Shakeout started in 2008, with the first ever shakeout in California. Scientists and state emergency departments felt that it was vital for citizens to be prepared and practice for a large San Andreas earthquake.

The Shakeout then began spreading to other states, Washington joined the event in 2012 and Oregon began participating in 2011. Large earthquakes can affect Washington and Oregon as well.

Schools around Benton and Franklin Counties participated in the event this morning. McClintock Elementary School in Pasco was one of those schools.

An announcement blared over their intercom exactly at 10:18 saying: "The earthquake drill has begun, please drop, cover and hold on."

Third graders immediately stopped working on their orbit science experiments, ducked under the desk and held onto the table leg for the entire drill, which lasted about a minute.

One student, Carver Kozelisky, said the drill was important. "It was at first a little fun, but if it was real then that would be pretty scary."

Over 60 million people were registered for this event.

Washington State Emergency Department highly encourages you to have an emergency kit prepared in your home and to make sure that you take stock of how much water there is in your kit. You can find preparedness tips here: http://mil..gov/preparedness
