Suicide Awareness For Everyone class comes to Yakima

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, WA- Nearly every 12 minutes a person commits suicide in the U.S. There are nearly twice as many suicides as homicides. Yakima's Comprehensive Healthcare is offering a free 90 minutes suicide prevention training On Thursday Oct. 25.

The class strives to teach protective factors, common warning signs of suicide, and intervention techniques.

Warning signs vary with age but are important to note. Warning signs for young children start with them giving things away. In adults it can come in forms of depression. For elderly, warning signs include isolation and failure to make appointments.

When it comes to intervention, S.A.F.E. teaches the Q.P.R. method, (Question, persuade, and resources). These intervention techniques can potentially help you save a person from committing suicide.

Q: You should have open conversations QUESTIONING those at risk if they're thinking about committing suicide

P: You can help PERSUADE someone to go and get the help they need

R: You can give people RESOURCES and options of who's available to help.

Nearly 90% of people communicate their thoughts of suicide before making an attempt.
