Cold War Patriots National Day of Remembrance

Posted: Updated:

RICHLAND, WA - Today marks the 10th year of the Cold War Patriots National Remembrance Day. The U.S. Senate established a National Day of Remembrance to recognize the people whose atomic work played a role in the nuclear developments industry surrounding World War II.

An event in at the Red Lion Hanford House honored former workers who worked out at the site. Although many former workers were at the event, they did honor those who have passed.

"Unfortunately we are losing a lot of those individuals, from all the exposure many of the workers had," said Kevin Fitzgerald, Cold War Patriots Community Outreach Coordinator. "They are getting older and their health is starting to deteriorate."

David Criswell worked out at the Hanford site for 44 years in the 306 lab and has been attending the local remembrance events for the last nine years.

"This group of people fits into a certain time period... and the group is getting smaller and we were talking about the group of people that aren't here no more," said Criswell.

Individuals were honored by speeches from Congressman Dan Newhouse, Richland Mayor Bob Thompson among others. A candle lighting ceremony to honor the legacy of those who have passed away.

This year marked a decade of this event and so in honor the Cold War Patriots gave special lapel pins. The bronze pins recognized those who worked in the program and silver for those who have health issues related to the honorable work they did.

Cold War Patriots hosted National Day of Remembrance events all around the nation today.
