A local GoFundMe account is being investigated for fraud

Posted: Updated:

RICHLAND, WA- Have you ever used a crowd-funding website? Have you used GoFundMe? It's easy to just click a link on Facebook and press "donate" to a cause explained on a GoFundMe page, but unfortunately some of these crowd-funded pages could have misleading information.

The Richland Police Department are investigating a GoFundMe page that was made last week as fraud or theft. There are claims that the entire incident was made up. A local woman claimed that she was the victim of a home invasion and sexual assault last week, and a friend set up a donation page on GoFundMe.

The page has since been taken down after being reported, but locals are feeling hurt, disappointed and scare after finding out that the page that raised nearly 3,000 dollars is being investigated as fraud.

"I'm kind of mixed with anger and hurt because you really want to trust a person and then you just cant...so you know it kind of smears the fundraising for real causes," said a victim of the fraud who wishes to remain anonymous.

The chance for the GoFundMe pages of being fraud are very slim, GoFundMe says that 1/10th of one percent is the amount that are reported as fraud.

Some advice to avoid for donated to crowd-funding sites is make sure to check the source to verify the cause of the donation page, look to see if direct friends and family are making the donations and check for misleading information.
