Bechtel Hanford Faces Nearly $200,000 in Fines

Bechtgel Hanford could be looking at a fine of nearly $200,000 stemming from on-going problems at the Vitrification Plant.

The Department of Energy says it plans to levy a fine of $198,000 on top of the nearly $500,000 in incentives it pulled back several months ago.

Over the past three year, a series of construction guideline and quality standard concerns has led DOE to investigate the $10 billion dollar construction project at Hanford.  DOE says there has been major progress in correcting some of the issues, which led them to reduce the amount of the fine substantially.  However, DOE says the remaining problems need some attention to avoid being a health or safety concern.

DOE wants the Vit Plant to be the solution to the problem of what to do with radioactive waste by turning it into glass.  The glass can be stored more safely since it won't leak into water supplies or aquifers.

to meet the design and construction schedule, DOE said.
