Should West Richland change its name to Red Mountain?

City officials say a name change has been discussed for nearly 20 years. But it was only recently that the growth in the city caused new, more serious discussions.

The most prevalent suggestion is Red Mountain - a part of the local identity that new businesses have already begun adopting. Some city leaders have always struggled to create a separate and distinct identity of its own... not just the western part of Richland.

Red Mountain is the state's new viticulture area, known for its high quality red wines. It's a 312-acre area stretching to Benton City.

A new I-82 interchange near West Richland provides drivers access to the Red Mountain wineries and opens the area up for further development. It could make it to the ballot this year, as early as November.
