Students Organize Town Hall Meeting to Talk Illegal Immigration

PASCO, Wash. - The recent controversy over illegal immigrants in the United States sparked the attention of middle school students in Pasco.

McLoughlin middle schoolers asked their teachers if they could work on a project to educate themselves on the recent controversial issue of immigration legislation.

On Monday night, they wrapped their project up by inviting one of the area's most knowledgeable immigration lawyers to answer tough questions at a town hall meeting.

The 8th graders said before the project they didnot know our area alone is home to about 100,000illegal immigrants, illegal workers do pay taxes, and arenot eligible for welfare without a valid social security card.

"Before I didn't know much about immigration we used to make jokes about it at school," said 8th grader Dillon Rice.

Rice said the project has brought the entire school together.

The students saidthey hope their project will help educate the adults in the community who have formed opinions without first educating themselves.
