Political Conventions to Provide Boost to Yakima Economy
YAKIMA, Wa - Both the Democratic and Republican parties will be holding political conventions in Yakima and it will mean big dollars for the local economy.
State Republicans will go first. They started arriving today -- their convention will start Friday.
This isn't the first time the Yakima Convention Center has hosted political conventions for both parties. It also happened back in 1998. Now, each political convention here in Yakima will bring in between 1,400 - 1,600 people. They will have a combined economic impact of $520,000 on the local economy.
The Director of Sales for the Yakima Conventions Center says it's not common for a city to be able to host both political conventions, but Yakima offers certain conveniences that some other cities in Central Washington do not, like the a facility that's able to host up to 2,000 people, affordability and hotels within walking distance.
The Republican convention will start Friday morning at 9 am and go through Saturday.
The Democrats will move in for their convention just four days later. They will be at the convention center from Thursday the first through Saturday the third.
