YAKIMA, Wash. -- Developers of a retail center on North 16th Avenue may be trying to capture shoppers Yakima is losing to other cities.
A recent survey of people in Yakima conducted by KNDO shows more than 63% of people shopping for clothing left the Yakima area to do it.
23% looked elsewhere for a new car, and nearly 19% left the Yakima area to shop for furniture. Nearly 29% of people say they travel to shop for other things.
This isn't the first time a shopping center has been proposed near 16th Avenue. Seven years ago, Yakima's Mercy Enterprises tried to develop the same land, but those plans fell through.
An environmental impact statement was issued for that project in 1999, so the new developers are already aware of potential problems like traffic and retail competition.
