Oregon Delegation Joins Waste Reclassification Battle

WASHINGTON, D.C.-  The re-classification of waste has been the source of some of the most heated exchanges between the Department of Energy and state and federal lawmakers... But now it's the seven members of the Oregon delegation weighing in with a letter stating their opposition to re-classification.

The letter is in response to a recent Federal Register notice saying it would "reasonable" to leave up to 10-percent of the tankwaste in the bottom of the tanks.

That would violate the Tri-Party Agreement, which says no more than 1-percent can be left behind.

The Department of Energy has long said they don't think the remaining 10 percent of waste is a threat to groundwater- that it'll be very expensive to cleanup, and that they're not even sure they have the technology to finish the job.
