Search for missing kayaker continues
KENNEWICK, Wash. - What started off as a fun kayaking trip Saturday afternoon turned into a nightmare. Today rescue crews continued their search along the Yakima River in the Horn Rapid Park for a missing man.
The Columbia Basin Dive rescue team said a life jacket must always be worn in open water. Scott Pattison, Dive Rescue team member said, "The biggest thing that everyone neglects and kayakers and canoers notorious, is not wearing life jackets. That's the number one thing."
Two men in the kayak were not wearing life jackets and witnesses said they saw the kayak flip over as they went through the Wanawish Dam.
Pattison said the dams are extremely dangerous to cross. "It's a man made structure that looks really easy to go over from up stream and if you're looking at it they don't look that dangerous most of the time, but the way the water circulates in those low head dams, it will just circle you over and over and there's nothing you can do."
Rescuers said if you plan on going out in a boat, canoe, or kayak know the water and let someone at home know what time they should expect you back.
