Hay Stack Fire Burns Overnight

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Wash. - Spontaneous combustion started a fire that destroyed over twelve hundred tons of hay last night, just north of Pasco.

Franklin County fire crews were called in just before ten last night, as flames rose from the heaps of smoldering hay. The fire continued to burn through the morning hours.

Fire crews didn't put the fire out, because it happened in what authorities call a no fire protect zone, so once the fire was contained crews left the farmer alone with the burning hay.

The farmer had sprinklers surrounding the area with water so the flames wouldn't spread to bails of hay, just a few yards away.
