CSEPP Drill Puts Hundreds into High Gear

HERMISTON, Oregon - With the sound of the siren the Umatilla Chemical Depot shifted into high gear on Tuesday.

A worker in the Emergency Operation Center announced over a microphone that nerve agent rockets had exploded and eleven had leaked the contaminate.

It's just a practice run, and evaluators are watching closely.

Staff from other weapons plants across the country serve as evaluators as close to 600 people come together to participate in the annual CSEPP drill.

Firefighters and emergency crews began setting up a decontamination station miles away.  They said it's necessary for the agencies to come together in the annual drill.  They add the practice is necessary in order to know how to handle a chemical emergency.

If there are major gaps in the system they'll be pointed out Tuesday night.  Within three months a detailed report will alert the community how the emergency was handled because of the potential hazard to the area.
