Body Found on Yakima River
West Richland, Wash. - The search for the body of a missing kayaker may be over. Friday rescue divers pulled the body of a man from the Yakima River near the area where Gary Kirk disappeared.
About 12:30 p.m. someone spotted the body of a man in the Yakima River about three quarters of a mile north of the Twin Bridges. It is the same area where searchers have been looking for 19 year old Justin Avery who disappeared Wednesday night. However, the body found Friday was located upstream from where Avery went missing.
At this time authorities have not confirmed that the body is the kayaker who was lost last Saturday, 46-yr-old Gary Kirk. The body has been taken to the Benton County Coroner's Office. for identification.
"Pending notification at the Benton County Coroner's Office, we are continuing to search for the second victim and will continue to search in conjunction with the Benton County Sheriff's department," said Francis Buck, Columbia Basin Dive Rescue.
Rescue teams plan to continue searching the river on a daily basis until both Kirk and Avery have been found and identified.
