RICHLAND, Wash. - Justin Avery was getting ready to receive his high school diploma, but he put it all on hold to help look for his friend's father Gary Kirk in the Yakima River. Kirk drown in the river last week.
Avery was not wearing a life jacket last Wednesday. He slipped into the river and wasn't seen until Sunday night when his body was recovered.
Now Avery's grandfather says he wants anyone who's considering getting in the river to wear a life jacket. He says the hundreds of people who volunteered their time looking for his grandson, including one U.S. Marshal, have touched their family forever.
The Avery family said they are grateful for all of the volunteers at the river, but hope Justin's death serves as a reminder of the necessity of life jackets.
They said they never want another family to suffer this preventable death.
