One of the Women Filing a Lawsuit Against Catholic Diocese of Yakima Comes Forward

YAKIMA, Wa -  One of the two women filing a lawsuit against the Catholic Diocese of Yakima speaks to KNDO in an exclusive interview.

Fran Cuhtahlatah lives in Ellebsburg now, but says she was abused by a now deceased priest who used to work at the St. Aloysius Church in Toppenish.  Cuhtahlathah grew up in Zillah and her family attended that church.  The priest's name is Michael J. Simpson and Cuhtahlatah says he only worked at the church for a few years.

Cuhtahlatah says she decided to come forward after learning about a lawsuit filed a year and a half ago by a woman named Rose Lamey.  She also alleges sexual abuse by Simpson.

"This is happening all over.  It's a continuing thing.  They've covered it up for the 40 years that I ave been suffering.  And isn't it time that somebody comes forward and acknowledges that yes indeed we made a mistake," says Cuhtahlatah.

Cuhatalatah says the alleged sexual abuse happened between 1959 and 1960.

KNDO called the Catholic Diocese of Yakima for comment and they directed us to their attorney.  He plans to issue a statement some time tomorrow (Thursday).
