KENNEWICK, Wash. - One local woman said changing diapers and going to PTA meetings was not what she had in mind for retirement, but like her more and more grandparents are raising their grandchildren.
In Benton and Franklin Counties there is almost 1,500 kids being raised by a grandparent or relative.
Connie Wormington, a local support group leader, has been raising her son's two children for 7 years after he got into trouble with drugs.
She said the responsibility is not easy and one of the toughest parts is not being able to associate with the people she use. "We're raising children so that's a whole other category again."
Wormington said financially it eats away at your retirement money but the rewards are worth it.
She blames increasing drug use as a reason why more grandparents are raising their grandchildren.
