Kennewick Police Take Over Mysterious Death Investigation
BENTON COUNTY, Wash. - An autopsy reveals several factors combined most likely killed a man as he tried to run away from Benton County Sheriff's Deputies.
Benton County coroner Floyd Johnson said a man in his 20's by the last name Gutiera had heart problems. He said coronary problems combined with drug use and the fact that the man was running from deputies likely killed him.
After being dispatched to 27th Avenue on Sunday, deputies found Gutiera inside a van off of the street. He appeared to be in a fight. When the deputy got closer to the vehicle, police said Gutiera took off running. He fell, cut himself, then stopped breathing. He was later pronounced dead at an area hospital.
Now Kennewick Police are investigating the case to make sure deputies handled the situation correctly. Neither Kennewick Police or Benton County Sheriffs had the full name or age of the man involved in the case on Monday night.
The exact cause of death won't be known until toxicology tests come back in several weeks.
