Yakima doesn't require skateboards to wear helmets
YAKIMA, Wash. - Skateboarders come to the Yakima Skate Park to practice and learn new tricks. Even though the city has put up a sign recommending them to wear helmets, a lot of them feel they don't need helmets because they just get in the way.
But with the recent death of a skateboarder in Port Angeles, questions are being raised about whether or not helmets should be required in Yakima.
According to Denise Nichols, manager with Yakima City Parks and Recreation, the reason why the city doesn't require skateboarders to wear helmets is because it would be too hard to enforce.
"I think the issue is enforcement," Nichols said. "If you do require it how do you go about enforcing it?"
Yakima City Councilmen, Ron Bonlender agrees, but it's something the city council should look into.
"I would not be opposed at looking at it certainly and see what effective," Bonlender said. "That's the key is if you can write an ordinance will it be effective, will it be followed, will it be enforced."
