Kittitas County Sheriff Offers Tips on Safe Hiking

ELLENSBURG, Wash.  --  Kittitas County Search and Rescue was able to find a missing hiker near Cathedral Lake, about 30 miles northwest of Roslyn.

They found Deluce Herrera Sunday afternoon, she'd been missing since Friday night.  Kittitas County Sheriff Gene Dana says she was in good shape.

King County provided a helicopter to help in the search.  At the same time, they picked up two hikers from Seattle, who got lost near Diamond Lake.

Sheriff Dana says it's unusual to have two searches going at the same time, and it's a strain on their resources.  He says those situations can be avoided.

"A lot of people forget about the technology we have now, you can use GPS, even a compass will help you find your way back to the road."

The couple lost near Diamond Lake was lucky, they were able to climb a hill to get cell phone reception, and call for help.  But that's usually not the case, Dana says there are no towers in those mountains.

That's why it's important to let a friend or family member know where you're going hiking or camping, where you're parking, and when you'll be home.

Dana adds, "That way we have an idea of where to start looking."

even if you're not planning to stay overnight, you should pack like it.  Bring extra food and water, warm clothes, and a blanket.

"If you do get stranded, get to a clearing, where we can spot you from the air." says Dana.
