YAKIMA, Wa - The heat is putting pressure on cherry growers to get their crops harvested as quickly as possible, but they're having trouble finding pickers.
3D Orchards in Zillah is racing to beat the heat, but they need more pickers to get their cherry crop harvested.
Rick Derrey owns the orchard and showed us how the hot sun is causing cherries to ripen faster. Some are already starting to become brown and soft.
He says right now cherry growers are competing for labor and that's only hurting everybody.
"They're driving around looking for more worl, looking for better jobs, looking for higher pay. there's a lot of growers that are short of pickers, so there are picked wanted signs our and people are paying more money than they would normally pay to get this stuff picked. what happens is pickers are driving around looking for better jobs, rather than picking," says Derrey.
Derrey says he was counting on ten pickers to help harvest his cherries today, but they never showed up.
