GLEED, Wash. - Fire season is here and every fire department in Yakima County is preparing in it's own way for a busy 4th of July weekend.
Volunteer firefighters is what keeps the Gleed Fire Department up and running, said Jim Kohl, Gleed Fire Chief.
But sometimes it's difficult to find enough volunteers to help assist with fires during the summer, he said.
"That's always a challenge because vacation times and people are gone so it puts a little more strain on the people that are here," Kohl said.
On Wednesday, an entire hillside in Gleed threatened dozens of homes. The fire required more firefighters and resources than the Gleed Fire Department could provide, Kohl said.
"It doesn't take much to extend a fire beyond our means, so yeah, we call for extra resources to come in and assist us," he said.
