SUNNYSIDE, Wash. - The Sunnyside City Council can't use a cell phone tax to fund more police officers because they already have one in place.
City council members did not know they already had the tax, so they're now looking for another way to come up with money.
The city decided look into a six percent utility users tax on cell phones a few weeks ago, said Robert Stockwell, city manger.
A person living in Sunnyside called the city to tell them he was already paying the tax .
The city did some digging and found out it had been receiving the utility tax all along from seven different cell phone providers over the last several years, Stockwell said.
"It was an error that was made clear back in at least 2002 and it was not detected until this last week," Stockwell said.
