MADISON, Indiana - "We're kind of used to it, " said Jimmy King, U-3 driver, about the fire on board the U-3 Master Tire on Sunday, "and the crew knows how to deal with it"
It made for a spectacular sight from the shoreline, but King said it's not that uncommon with a piston engine. "Unfortunately," he said, "oil hits the exhaust, it's gonna light it up."
There was some damage from the fire to the delaminate on the boat, he said, "but not as bad as the right side of the boat."
As of Monday, there's still a question whether the U-3 will make it to the Valleyfield, Quebec race. "We've got tickets, hotels... and the intent is there," King said.
