Former Mariner Jay Buhner Visits Yakima County Stadium
YAKIMA, Wash. - Jay Buhner has been out of baseball for five years but he's still a big hit in the Northwest. The former Mariner was at the Bears game Monday evening for 'Jay Buhner Night.'
The Bears borrowed from the M's and had stylists give fans "Buhner Buzz Cuts". Any fan that got a buzz cut (a la Jay Buhner) was given a free soda and a ticket to an upcoming game. Buhner himself even gave one of the fans "a trim."
Buhner threw out the first pitch of the game and then signed autographs on the main concourse.
The former Mariner played 15 seasons in the majors (14 with Seattle). He belted 310 career homers and was an All-Star in 1996. Buhner also played on four Mariner teams that reached the postseason.
In a trade that has become baseball lore and Seinfeld trivia, Seattle acquired Buhner from the Yankees on July 21, 1988 for Ken Phelps.
Last season, the Bears held a similar promotion and Edgar Martinez came to the ballpark.
