KENNEWICK, Wash. - The commissioners of the Benton and Franklin counties' PUDs are opposing Initiative 937, which would require an increased investment in renewable energy resources.
The measure would require 15% of energy created by large electricity utilities to come from sources such as wind and solar power.
Benton PUD President Bob Bertsch points out that 84% of their energy comes from hydroelectric power. I-937 does not include hydro power in its 15% requirement unless the dam has received effeciency upgrades since 1999.
Bertsch estimates Benton PUD customers would see a 4% increase in rates if the measure passes.
