Another Hotel Downtown Could Help with Conventions
YAKIMA, Wa - The developer who built the Hilton Garden Inn is thinking about building another hotel in the downtown area. The Yakima Convention Center says that could help bring more conventions to the city and, in turn, more money into the local economy.
The Convention Center says that often times having enough hotel accommodations within walking distance is a deal breaker when they try to attract events.
"It all depends on what type of group it is, but for some of them it's mandatory," says Connie Upton, Assistant General Manager of the Yakima Convention Center.
The convention center brings millions into the local economy each year. Upton says more than $1.3 million dollars last month and close to $11.5 million dollars so far this year.
She says the Hilton Garden Inn has really helped the convention center attract more events this summer.
"It's hard to judge at this time, although I can tell yah with just the Hilton Garden Inn and all the stuff on Yakima Avenue, we have created such excitement with planners that groups that left Yakima are looking at us again," says Upton.
