YAKIMA, Wash. - The latest SAT scores released by the College Board are good news for Washington state, but bad news for Yakima.
Washington state scores in reading and math came in well above the national average, Yakima is below it. Greg Day, who's in charge of academic assessment, says you can't compare this year's scores to last year's. The college board added a writing section this year.
Day says the test is voluntary, so it's tough to gauge how it reflects on Yakima's education system.
"We have a more diverse population taking the SAT than we did five or 10 years ago. That's a good sign, it means more students are looking at college as a viable alternative." says Day.
Yakima's average reading scores came in at 495, math at 493, and writing at 474. Washington scores were an average 36 points above those.
