KENNEWICK, Wash - Republican Senate candidate Mike McGavick is pulling out all the stops to get the word out about his campaign. On Wednesday, First Lady Laura Bush spoke at a fundraiser luncheon for McGavick.
The room at the Three Rivers Convention Center was packed to capacity with more than 400 people listening in. Tickets were $150. Pictures with the First Lady were $1,000.
Bush said McGavick showed leadership, when he saved jobs as the CEO of Safeco Insurance, and that he's saving more jobs by supporting the President's line item veto, which cuts unnecessary spending from the federal budget.
Most importantly to the former librarian, Bush said McGavick recognizes the significance of education.
"He is especially dedicated to an issue that is close to my heart, early childhood literacy. Mike understands that education is vital to every child's success and that learning begins in the very first years of a child's life," Bush said.
McGavick is running against incumbent Senator Maria Cantwell in the November election.
