YAKIMA, Wash. - Yakima could soon claim its first historic neighborhood. A local man is presenting a proposal to the city council, to designate a historic district around Memorial Hospital.
Walt Ranta's proposed boundaries are 16th to 36th avenues, and Summitview to Tieton. The designation would be similar to that of many older homes in the area, like the Gilbert House.
If the city council and the preservation society both agree, it would be the first neighborhood in the city on the historic register.
Homeowners in the district would then be eligible for property tax breaks, if they do a certain amount of restoration work on their homes.
