YAKIMA, Wa - The State Superintendent released official WASL results. This is the first year that passing the WASL is a graduation requirement for sophomores.
Statewide results in reading and writing are up substantially with about 80% passing both sections. Math was up slightly -- but still -- a disappointing 51-percent passed.
Science actually dropped a few percentage points from last year with only 35-percent passing. 10th graders will be required to pass the science section starting in 2008.
WASL scores were a little lower for some school districts here in the valley. The Yakima School District saw big gains in reading and writing -- like many other schools districts across the state. They had close to 60% passing those sections, but only 25% passed math.
