Kennewick - Years after the terrorist attacks in New York, American soldiers continue the battle in Afghanistan and Iraq, and maintain posts around the world. The violence in those countries is not letting up. Over two thousand of this country's military men and women have died since war in the Mideast was declared.
In the Tri-Cities, one woman continues her own courageous effort to support the miliitary. Jan Sass started U.S. Troop Care Package shortly after the war began. Since then, the program has expanded to a nationwide effort involving hundreds of volunteers.
U.S. Troop Care Package puts together special boxes of necessities and gifts for soldiers, often taking single orders totaling thousands of boxes at a time. Sass says each year the demand for care packages doubles.
"We get a lot of comments from soldiers saying 'I can't believe someone who doesn't know me from Adam would send me a care package.' Looking at that, I can't believe someone who doesn't know me from Adam would risk their life protecting my freedom."
