ELLENSBURG, Wash -- the state Department of Ecology announced that John and Cristi Eaton, of Kittitas County will receive an award for using farming practices that contribute to clean water.
With a grant and help from the local conservation district, they developed a plan to improve the water quality of Wilson creek which runs through their farm. The couple planted over two thousand trees and bushes along the banks of the creek. The trees and bushes will shade the creek from the late afternoon sun -- keeping the water tempeture cool during the hot summer months and providing a better environment for fish.
Additionally, they added a fence along the the creek to prevent cattle from accessing the creek.
"Without outside funding from the conservation district and their program," said John Eaton, "it would have been very difficult to have accomplished this much."
