Local parent concerned about social website
PASCO, Wash. - A mother found out that her 14-year-old daughter snuck out of the house to meet up with an 20-year-old man she meet on a popular Internet site.
Myspace.com is an increasingly popular social network on the web, but some think it is a haven for sexual predators.
Kids and adults all over the world log on to Myspace.
Each member has a profile which shows your favorite music, hobbies and interests. Members can also meet others and connect with friends.
One local mother said she was shocked when she read her daughters Myspace page. She said, "I looked at her Myspace. I looked at what she wrote and what these people wrote and it's just scary. You would never think your daughter talks like that."
The woman did not want to be identified said wants other parents to learn from her experience and that she was shocked one night when she checked on her daughter to find she was not sleeping in bed.
She said, "She wasn't to far from the house, but this was at two o'clock in the morning, now what if he was waiting there." The mother goes on to explain that he was a 20 year-old her teenage daughter met on Myspace. She said she could not believe that this was happening to her family.
Local police said they have seen predators travel to the Tri-Cities to meet up with minors they meet on Myspace but the online site said that there is restrictions on adults contacting minors.
But this mother thinks there is just too much personal information shown and said the site is inappropriate. She said, "Some of these kids are 10, 13, 14. They don't look that age."
After she caught her daughter sneaking out, she opened her own account on the site and posed as a teen. She said after seeing it herself her daughter is no longer allowed on the site.
