Astronaut Pushes for Early Reading

YAKIMA, Wash. - A local astronaut pushes for a take-off for early learning in Yakima County.

Dr. Bonnie Dunbar, a retired NASA astronaut launched the first 'Circle of Success' fireside event at Pat and Al Deatley's home on Scenic Drive in Yakima on Monday.

The Sunnyside native also introduced the 'Let's Read' Early Education program in the Valley.

It delivers books to the mailboxes of children up to five years old.

Today, thanks to grants and help from the community. There are over 1,500 children enrolled in the book club.

The goal is to enroll 10,000.

Around 200 leaders in Yakima County got a first hand look at the emerging industry of early learning.

'Let's Read' officials are currently assembling a team of volunteers to meet needs of the program.
