YAKIMA, Wash -- Ten thousand race fans attended the Fall Classic this weekend -- many of them came from somewhere other than Yakima.
Some like Stephen Hunt arrived Friday. By spending the weekend in Yakima, they contribute a lot to the local economy. "The convenience store gets a lot of business from us on the corner there," said Hunt. "We buy beer, water, and soda for the kids and different kinds of food."
The speedway is home to Yakima's largest spectator events --- but is open only 24 days a year. According to track manager, Ron Bennett, that makes turning a profit tricky.
Recently, there was a proposal to sell the speedway. The owners decided against it - for now.
That means out of town race fans will continue to come to Yakima, and spend money in Yakima.
