Firefighters responds to their own fire

YAKIMA, Wash. - The Yakima Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire Friday morning only to find out it was one of their own.

According to firefighters, they were a little confused when they heard their own fire alarm going off.

The fire happened just after 1:30 on Friday morning at fire station 91.

Firefighters could smell smoke and knew something was wrong. said Dennis Mayo, Yakima Fire Chief.

When firefighters looked in the apparatus bay, where the fire trucks are stored, they saw a familiar orange glow-- The Battalion Chief's 2001 Ford Excursion was on fire, Mayo said.

"Thank goodness we had an alarm system that was activated to get hose persons out, save them and we were able to confine it to one apparatus," Mayo said.

The fire is still under investigation, but Mayo believes it has to do with an electrical malfunction.

The fire caused about 20 thousand dollars in damage.
