Umatilla Inmate commits suicide in Cell

UMATILLA COUNTY, Wash. - Prison guards went to get an inmate for breakfast and found him dead in his cell early this morning.

The Umatilla County Sheriff said 31-year old Thomas Francis Humiston committed suicide.

The Sheriff said he hung himself with a bed sheet and said guards had just checked on him about 45 minutes prior to finding him dead.

The jail is located in the basement of the sheriff's office.

Humiston was in jail for attempted rape, kidnapping, sexual abuse and public indecency.  Authorities said he was also a suspect for sex crimes on the east coast.

Sheriff John Trumbo said he was facing a lot of jail time and speculates that he "probably just figured this was the easy way out....  People that are looking at significant jail time sometimes do things that the average person wouldn't."

The Sheriff said there are cameras all over the jail but the courts ruled it is a violation of privacy to have them in individual cells.

Humiston was in protective custody because of the sexual nature of his crimes.
