Confusion About Humane Society Political Support

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash - Now politics is getting in the way of fundraising efforts for the non-profit Benton -Franklin Humane Society.

A flyer being sent out by the Humane Society of the United States' "Humane Society Legislative Fund" asks people to vote for Maria Cantwell because it claims Mike McGavick is against animals.

The fund is the legislative arm of the Humane Society of the United States, which  has nothing to do with the Benton Franklin Humane Society, said BFHS Operations Manager, Ed Dawson.

However, Dawson said local people have decided to discontinue to send the BFHS money because they've confused the national humane society with the local one.

"Our organization does not support any political candidates or initiatives, we're here as a non-profit no-kill animal facility," Dawson said.

The loss is already in the hundreds, maybe thousands, Dawson said.
