Neighbors respond to gang shooting

YAKIMA, Wash. - After gunshots were fired on Naches Avenue, one neighbor, who lives just down the street, said she heard the noise.

"Well I was upstairs in my room and I just heard gunshots," said the neighbor, who asked for her identity to be kept secret for her own safety. "I was just a little scared there for a bit and just ran downstairs to see what happened."

But there wasn't much to see once she got outside-- those responsible had already left the scene.

This isn't the first time a shooting has happened in the neighborhood, said the neighbor.

"I mean it's been awhile since something like this has happened."

Naches Avenue has a reputation for gang related violence, said Greg Copeland, Captain with the Yakima Police Department.

"We've had some incidents up there in the north east part of town, on Naches."

As for the neighbor, she knows gang members live in her neighborhood and knows Saturday's shooting was gang related. It's something she says she has gotten use to, but will always be scared of.

"I'm always scared," said the neighbor.
