Arsonist Believed to be Responsible for Fire that Destroyed Sheriff's Precinct
YAKIMA, Wa - The Yakima Sheriff's Office blames an arsonist for a fire that destroyed its lower valley precinct.
Lieutenant Max James says an ATF dog alerted them to accelerants at the scene. He says they have no suspects at this time. The fire completely destroyed the lower valley precinct on Sunday night.
But some good news... the county won't have to foot the bill for a new building. Insurance will cover the cost.
County Commissioner Ron Gamache says their first priority is to clean the mess up as soon as possible.
"The most important conclusion that we have is not to have a burned out building in the public to be an eye sore," says Gamache, "We want to clean that up as soon as possible and then look at other future locations."
No timetable has been set on when a new precinct will be built. They're also considering a move to a new location.
The fire won't have any affect on regular patrols in the lower valley. Other agencies and neighboring cities are offering extra space for sheriff's deputies who need it.
